PIERCING HEALING GUIDE

Healing Times & Placement Notes

Cartilage has far less blood supply than the lobe — it heals slower and needs more patience. Surface comfort doesn't always mean the piercing is fully settled underneath.

PLACEMENTHEALING TIMENOTES
Lobe6–8 weeksFleshy tissue with the best blood supply — the fastest healing and most forgiving placement.
Helix3–6 monthsCartilage; can look and feel healed on the surface well before it's fully healed inside.
Mid Helix3–6 monthsSimilar profile to a standard helix piercing.
Forward Helix3–6 monthsSmall cartilage fold near the front of the ear; prone to bumps if the jewellery gets knocked.
Hidden Helix4–8 monthsTucked into the inner rim — harder to clean and easy to snag, so it often runs longer.
Tragus4–8 monthsThicker cartilage with a moderate healing timeline.
Flat6–9 monthsSits in a spot that gets frequent contact from glasses, headphones, and sleeping — this slows healing.
Rook6–9 monthsOne of the more sensitive cartilage placements; swelling in the first weeks is common.
Conch6–9 monthsDeep, cartilage-heavy placement. Inner conch specifically can run closer to 12 months.
Contraconch6–9 monthsRidge cartilage with a healing profile similar to conch and rook.
General Notes
—These ranges reflect full internal healing — surface healing (no pain, normal appearance) usually happens well before that. Changing jewellery too early is the most common cause of bumps or rejection.
—Cartilage piercings shouldn't be downsized or have jewellery swapped until fully healed — check with your piercer first.
—Sleeping directly on a fresh cartilage piercing, headphones, and phone calls are common pressure points that can extend healing.
—Normal healing looks like mild redness, tenderness, and clear or light discharge. Increasing redness, warmth, thick discoloured discharge, or fever are signs of infection and should be checked by a piercer or doctor.
